How does the return journey after the au pair year work?

Short answer

Towards the end of the au pair time, the au pair should decide in good time whether they will return to their home country or, for example, stay in Germany for an FSJ (a voluntary social year) or vocational training.

What lies behind it

If the au pair stays in Germany and moves in good time into a suitable Aufenthaltstitel (residence title), no return flight is required.

If they return to their home country, departure must take place no later than the expiry of the valid Aufenthaltstitel (residence title). The return flight should therefore be planned well in advance.
