Can the au pair year be extended?

What lies behind it

The minimum duration is 6 months, the maximum 12 months. Even the Ausländerbehörde (the local immigration authority responsible for residence permits) cannot extend the au pair stay beyond this maximum duration.

If the au pair wants to stay in Germany afterwards, they need a different purpose of residence, for example for an FSJ (a voluntary social year) or vocational training.
