Which airport should we choose for our au pair's arrival?

Short answer

We recommend choosing a larger international airport in Germany — for example Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg or Berlin. The journey should be as simple as possible for the au pair: ideally direct, without further connections within Germany.

What lies behind it

We recommend choosing a larger international airport in Germany for your au pair's arrival wherever possible, for example Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg or Berlin.

The most important point is this: the journey should be as simple as possible for the au pair. Many of our au pairs have never flown internationally on their own before. After a long journey of sometimes ten, twelve or even more hours, additional connections within Germany can quickly become a challenge.

Every further connection also increases the risk of a missed connecting flight, problems with luggage, or the au pair having to find their way around an unfamiliar airport. It is therefore particularly unfavourable when an au pair first lands at a large German airport and then has to fly on one or more times simply so that the host family has a shorter journey to pick them up.

In terms of price, too, flights to large international airports are often cheaper than connections to smaller regional airports.

Our recommendation is therefore: please check together with your au pair which larger airport is easy to reach and offers a direct or uncomplicated flight connection wherever possible. When in doubt, it is often more sensible for the host family to drive a little further to pick them up than for the au pair to have to manage several additional connections after a long international journey.

When planning the flight, please consider not only the distance from the airport to where you live, but also the total travel time and strain for your au pair.
