If, for example, your au pair cannot arrive on 1 October but only on 1 November, an extension of the Aufenthaltserlaubnis (residence permit) can be requested from the relevant Ausländerbehörde (local immigration authority) after arrival. The actual date of arrival can be proven using the entry stamp in the passport.
