What happens if the FSJ (a voluntary social year) or vocational training does not start straight after the au pair time?

What lies behind it

If, for example, the au pair time ends in late February but the training does not start until April, only the Ausländerbehörde (local immigration authority) decides whether — and on what legal basis — the au pair may remain in Germany during March. In some cases, a Fiktionsbescheinigung (a certificate confirming temporary legal status) can be issued for this.

We as an au pair agency have no influence on this decision.

If the further stay is permitted, the former au pair may, for example, continue to live as a guest with the previous host family. However, during this in-between period they are no longer working as an au pair. Suitable separate insurance cover must also be arranged for this time.
