Living together and settling in
What happens if my au pair falls ill?
Short answer
Of course an au pair can also fall ill. For this case, they hold health insurance for the duration of their stay and can receive medical treatment in Germany. Which costs and services are covered depends on the particular insurance tariff and should be clarified directly with the insurer. If a doctor's visit is needed, please support your au pair in finding a doctor and arranging the appointment.

What lies behind it
Especially in the first few weeks, adjusting to a new country can be physically and emotionally exhausting. A different climate, unfamiliar food, a new daily rhythm, the foreign language and the many new impressions can all play a role. Not every feeling of being unwell points to a bigger problem.
If you notice that your au pair is not doing well or is often exhausted, an open conversation often helps: how are they coping with the new situation? Do they feel at ease? Is everyday life perhaps still too demanding, or do they need a little more time to settle in?
If there are health complaints, the au pair should of course see a doctor. Keep in mind: your au pair is a young person in a foreign country and knows neither the German healthcare system nor necessarily how a doctor's appointment works. Help with booking the appointment and accompany your au pair if needed, or arrange for someone who can support them.
For questions about cost coverage, medication or further medical services, please contact the relevant au pair health insurer directly. The specific services depend on the tariff taken out.
