How much holiday entitlement does our au pair have?
Short answer
Your au pair is entitled to 2 Tage of paid holiday per month spent with you. For a twelve-month au pair stay, this comes to 24 days of holiday.
If your family goes on holiday, you can decide whether the au pair comes along and provides support as usual there, or whether they also have holiday during this time.

What lies behind it
If you take your au pair with you on a family holiday and they are meant to look after the children or support you in everyday life there, this does not count as holiday for the au pair. They are simply working in a different location. The agreed working hours and free time continue to apply.
If you go away without your au pair and give them holiday for this period, this should be discussed together in good time. This allows the au pair to plan their free time as well — visit friends, travel, or decide for themselves whether they would rather stay at your home during this time.
Board and lodging must also continue to be provided free of charge during the holiday. If the au pair stays at home, please make sure there is enough food or provide them with a suitable budget for meals. If a shopping budget is agreed, it can also be agreed that the corresponding receipts are kept.
Important: holiday means genuine free time for the au pair too. They may decide for themselves whether to stay at home, visit friends, or travel. If, for example, they are expected to stay home during your absence to regularly look after pets or take on other tasks, this counts as a duty to be present. This time cannot then also be counted as holiday at the same time.
