Choosing and getting to know an au pair
Which countries do our au pairs come from?
Short answer
Our au pairs currently come mainly from India, in particular from Kerala, as well as from various African countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya. We also place au pairs from Indonesia. Which countries of origin are currently represented can change again and again, depending on applicant numbers and the availability of Botschaftstermine (appointments at the German embassy).

Which country of origin fits our family?
For us, the individual person always matters far more than the country of origin: personality, experience with children, motivation and, of course, the question of whether the au pair fits your everyday family life and your children.
Even so, in our day-to-day placement work we do notice cultural differences. We often experience many of our au pairs from India, especially from Kerala, as somewhat calmer and more reserved at first. This can, for example, fit very well with a lively family that would like a calm counterbalance in everyday life.
Many of our African au pairs, on the other hand, we experience as more open, communicative and very active. Some come from larger families themselves and have already taken on responsibility for younger siblings or other children at an early age. This can fit particularly well with families who would like plenty of initiative, presence and activity in everyday life.
Of course, these are not fixed rules. That is why we do not simply recommend a particular country of origin, but look at every au pair individually: who fits your children, your everyday life and what you wish for your shared au pair year?
