Can we get the costs of an au pair reimbursed?
Short answer
Yes, a partial or full reimbursement of costs can be possible for families with a child with a disability. One possible route is via Eingliederungshilfe (support for people with disabilities) benefits and the Persönliches Budget (a German benefit paid to you as money you manage yourself), for example for Freizeitassistenz (leisure-time support). Whether and to what extent this is possible in your individual case must be assessed by an advice service or the responsible Leistungsträger (the public body responsible for paying the benefit).

Cost coverage through the Persönliches Budget
Families with a child with a disability can have it assessed whether Freizeitassistenz can be approved as part of Eingliederungshilfe and financed through a Persönliches Budget. Depending on the individual case, this can make it possible to cover some or all of the costs arising from the au pair.
Which benefits your child is entitled to, which Leistungsträger is responsible, and which costs can actually be covered depend on various individual circumstances. As an au pair agency, we cannot and may not offer individual application advice, nor can we make any commitment on cost coverage.
We do, however, want to make sure you are aware of this option. For an individual assessment, we recommend an independent advice service, for example the EUTB (Ergänzende unabhängige Teilhabeberatung, an independent participation advice service). The advice is free of charge and available nationwide. There you can discuss your personal situation and find out what options exist for your child.
