What does an au pair cost per month?

Which ongoing costs are added?

An au pair receives 280 € Taschengeld per month. In addition, the host family contributes 70 € per month towards the language course and covers the cost of the necessary au pair insurance.

On top of that come accommodation and full board. The au pair needs their own furnished room and lives with the family as a member of the household during the au pair year. This also means: breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as drinks are provided by the host family – generally in the same way as they are provided for the family itself.

Another point is mobility. The host family covers the necessary travel costs to the language course. What this looks like in practice differs from family to family: some au pairs attend an online language course, cycle, or can get a lift with the host family. Others need bus or train.

For many families, the Deutschlandticket is therefore the simplest solution. It allows the au pair not only to get to the language course, but also to be mobile in their free time. An au pair should have the opportunity during their stay to take part in cultural and social life – for example visiting friends, getting to know another city, or attending cultural events. The host family does not have to pay for tickets or leisure activities, but should enable the necessary mobility.

Our tip: if your au pair regularly needs bus and train, a Deutschlandticket is usually the most straightforward solution. This covers the journey to the language course and lets the au pair organise their free time independently.
