How does the au pair open a bank account?
Short answer
The bank account is only opened after arrival in Germany and always runs in the au pair's name. One of the requirements is the tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer), which the au pair receives after registering their address.

Opening a bank account after arrival
As soon as the necessary documents are available, the au pair can open their own bank account. We recommend that host families accompany their au pair to the appointment at the bank and offer support where needed.
The monthly au pair pocket money should then be transferred to this account rather than paid in cash. This way, the payment is documented and traceable for both sides.
