What does an au pair need for vocational training or an FSJ?

Short answer

First, the au pair needs an offer for a place in vocational training or an FSJ. The further steps for moving from the au pair stay into the new activity are then clarified by the au pair together with their new employer or provider. The host family does not need to organise this process.

What lies behind it

Once the au pair has found a place in vocational training or an FSJ, the future employer or provider takes on the further necessary steps together with the au pair.

This usually also includes applying for the corresponding new Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit). Which documents are needed for this and what exactly needs to be done, the au pair learns from their future employer or provider and the responsible Ausländerbehörde (the German immigration authority).

Important for you as a host family: you do not have to organise the change and do not need to submit any applications for the au pair. You can of course support your au pair if you wish - but responsibility for the next steps lies with the au pair and their future placement.
